Thai Pad Basil Pork

Thai food often involves a number of great protein-rich recipes. One particularly popular dish is Thai Pad Basil Pork (or if pork isn’t your thing, chicken, beef, shrimp or tofu). Also known by names like Pad Krapao, Thai Stir-Fry Pork and simply Thai Basil Pork, there are many variations to this dish, so feel free to add, subtract or substitute things to your specific taste. Here is one particularly delicious recipe for Thai Pad Basil Pork!

Ingredients For Thai Pad Basil Pork:

  • 3 tbsp. of vegetable oil
  • 2 thinly sliced shallots
  • 7 sliced cloves of garlic
  • 3 thinly sliced Thai bird or Holland chilies
  • 1 lb. of ground pork
  • 1 tsp. of sugar
  • 1 tbsp. of fish sauce
  • 2 tbsp. of dark soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp. of light soy sauce
  • 1/3 cup of low-sodium chicken broth or water
  • 2 tsp. of oyster sauce
  • Holy basil leaves

Directions For Thai Pad Basil Pork:

  1. Heat a wok on the stove to medium heat. Add the oil, shallots, and garlic and fry for 3 minutes.
  2. Add the chilies to the mixture and cook for an additional minute.
  3. Once those have been mixed and cooked, turn the heat up to high. Break up the ground pork into small bits and add them to the mixture, giving the pieces a chance to get crispy. Make sure to stir the mixture together and make sure it all cooks together nicely.
  4. Add the sugar, fish sauce, both light, and dark soy sauces and oyster sauce. Stir-fry for an additional minute and deglaze the wok with the broth or with water (the liquid should cook off fairly quickly since the heat is still on high). Add the basil and stir-fry the mix until they are wilted.
  5. Serve the Thai Pad Basil Pork over white jasmine rice and enjoy!

Notes:

 

  • Feel free to either use Thai sweet basil, Thai holy basil or regular basil to taste.
  • If pork isn’t your thing, you can swap it out for chicken, beef or shrimp. If you are looking for a vegetarian option, you use mushrooms or tofu instead.
  • If you prefer, you can deseed your Thai bird or Holland chilies before using them.
  • Top the dish with a fried egg if desired for added flavor and protein.
  • Feel free to experiment with adding some of your favorite vegetables as well, such as onions and bell peppers to taste.
